Velma Joan (Thompson) Smith
November 10, 1941 – May 9, 2026
Velma Joan Thompson Smith was born on November 10, 1941, to Joe and Thelma Thompson in Depew, Oklahoma. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 9, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones at her home in Depew.
Joan was the second of six children and was lovingly known as her daddy’s “pet” and her siblings’ beloved “Jodi.” She grew up helping wherever needed alongside her brothers and sisters—whether working in the fields or caring for the home.
She met the love of her life, Jesse Clinton “J.C.” Smith, and the two were married on September 4, 1959, at the preacher’s house in Shamrock, Oklahoma, for the grand cost of five dollars. Together they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, faith, and devotion.
From this union came two children, Teresa Gayle and James Earl Smith, who became the pride and joy of Joan’s life. Over the years, the family made several moves before eventually settling in Hennessey, Oklahoma, where Joan worked for many years at the local bank. Through her work and kindness, she formed many lifelong friendships while raising her family. After retirement, Joan and J.C. returned home to Depew, where they enjoyed spending time with family, especially their many siblings, nieces, and nephews.
Joan cherished time spent with her sisters, especially her sister and best friend, Betty. Together they enjoyed countless garage sale adventures, travels to California and Hawaii, and a lifetime of treasured memories.
She was blessed with seven grandchildren and took great pride in attending the many milestones of their lives. Whether it was ballgames, school shopping trips, or simply being there whenever needed, Joan loved her family deeply. She was known for her caring heart and for always calling to check in on those she loved.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, J.C. Smith, of the home; her children, Teresa (Ray) Stribel of Hennessey and James (Kathy) Smith of Depew; her siblings, Violet (Gus) Henrich, Betty (Mac) Archibald, and Bobbie (Butch) Burdick; her grandchildren, Clint (Trisha) Stribel, Marissa (Russ) Choate, Amber (Tyler) Scruggs, Shawn Jester(and family), Austin Smith, T.J. Smith, and Katie Smith; as well as eight great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Thelma Thompson, and her brothers, Tony (Earlene) Thompson and Paul (Bobbie) Thompson and Brother-in-laws Gus Henrich and Mac Archibald.
Joan will be remembered for her unwavering love for family, her generous heart, her adventurous spirit, and the countless lives she touched throughout her years. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service celebrating Joan’s exceptional life will be held on May 15, 2026 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Depew, Ok. We invite all who knew and loved Joan to join us in honoring her memory.
