A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms swept through the Hennessey area Friday evening, June 26, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for portions of Kingfisher County.
The storm rapidly intensified as it moved just south of Hennessey before passing directly over Dover. The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of up to 70 mph with the storm.
As the weather approached, the Hennessey Fire Department activated its storm command at the fire station and deployed several crews to monitor conditions and respond to any emergencies.
Following the storm, firefighters and Hennessey Police responded to multiple incidents. A downed power line was reported at the intersection of Conoco Road and Cemetery Road. Crews also responded to the Hennessey Care Center after lightning struck the facility. Firefighters determined the strike had caused an electrical coil to overheat, producing smoke inside the building. After checking the entire facility, crews disconnected the suspected source and confirmed the building was safe.
While the storm brought dangerous weather, it also created a remarkable sight. As the thunderstorm moved east of town, a large fireworks display south of Hennessey lit up the night sky against the backdrop of towering storm clouds and frequent lightning. The unusual combination was visible for miles, with residents from across the area commenting on the spectacular scene. Photos by AAH Jack Quirk
