Each week, the Hennessey POST will feature a member of the Hennessey Fire Department, sharing their stories, what inspired them to join the fire service, and some of the accomplishments and experiences they’ve had along the way.
Lieutenant Tyson Copeland
Some people become firefighters because they love the excitement. For Hennessey Fire Department Lieutenant Tyson Copeland, that may have been what first caught his attention, but it quickly became something much more meaningful.
A lifelong Hennessey resident, Tyson, 39, joined the Hennessey Fire Department in October 2011. At the time, he admits he had always enjoyed seeing a good fire and figured it would be fun to help put them out. But after joining the department, his perspective changed.
“I learned there’s much more than just fighting fires,” Tyson said. “It became more of a passion to help those in need.”
Today, Tyson serves as a lieutenant with the department while also owning Legacy Lawn & Pest Solutions. Whether he’s responding to emergencies or running his business, serving his community has become a way of life.
When asked what he enjoys most about being a firefighter, Tyson doesn’t hesitate.
“The brotherhood,” he said.
Like many volunteer firefighters, balancing work, family, and emergency calls is part of the job. When he’s not wearing bunker gear, Tyson spends his time chasing his three kids from gyms to ballfields, cheering them on at their activities.
Over the years, Tyson has responded to countless emergencies, making it difficult to choose just one that stands out. Instead, it’s the opportunity to help neighbors on what may be the worst day of their lives that continues to motivate him.
His message to the community is simple but heartfelt:
“God bless this town.”
