Senior night for the 0-9 Eagles kicked off last night vs the 1-8 Newkirk Tigers. A season filled with so much promise has hit a downward spiral, but the boys had one final chance to punch in a W. Newkirk started with the football and took hold of the lead early with a 10 minute, 17 play 82 yard touchdown drive. The Eagles would instantly respond though, as the senior Zack Tillman punched in a 6 yard touchdown. They’d get the football back immediately, and Luis Macias-Montoya would drill a short field goal for the 10-6 lead. The boys kept humming, and Senior WR Weston Smith fired a 34 yard touchdown to Kevin Trillo for the 17-6 lead. On the next drive though, the Tigers would take a 58 yard touchdown to paydirt and cut the lead to just 3. The boys were then backed up to their own 10 yard line, and tossed a bubble screen the way of Kevin Trillo, who preceded to take it 75 yards and flip the field for the Eagles to the 15. A few plays later Holder would take it in for the 6 inch touchdown. An interception with a mere 13 seconds left seemed like the Eagles would just take it to half, but Smith had other plans. He took an 80 yarder back to the house to give the eagles the 30-14 halftime cushion.
The Eagles offense came to a halt in the second half, and the Tigers started to get into a groove. It was just an 8 point ball game headed into the 4th quarter. 12 minutes away from a sweet ending to the sour season, they held strong defensively until there were just 4 minutes 21 seconds to play. Newkirk would punch in a touchdown and needed a 2 pointer, senior Cam Griffin would bring him down short, and all the offense needed to do was waste 4 minutes. That they did! A long, tough season for the boys will send the seniors off with a senior night victory in their final time rocking the Blue and White. Final score was 30 Eagles – 28 Tigers.
