DEFENSE. WINS. CHAMPIONSHIPS

As displayed on the hardwood of the Eagle Event Center in Hennessey on Saturday night (February 27) in the Oklahoma Class 2A Boys Basketball Championship Series, defense definitely wins championships. Regional Championships, in this case. By allowing single digits in each of the first three quarters to the Boone-Apache Warriors (6-12), and going on a 12-0 run to end the first half and begin the second, the Hennessey Eagles cruised to a 55-38 Regional Championship win. 14 of the Warriors’ 17 fourth quarter points came after the Eagles’ starters had taken their final bows and had begun resting for the Area tournament. Juan Dominguez got the scoring started by nailing a 3 on the opening possession. JuanDo hammered three more 3’s in the first half, and had a team-high 18 points. Jael Torres was slowed offensively in the first half, but got things going after the break, finishing with 12 points, while going 2 for 4 from the line. Cristian Rodriguez followed with 8 points, including a buzzer-beating 3 to end the first quarter. Christian Tovar also had 8, all in the 3rd quarter, and Wade Vinson added 5 in the 4th, before giving way to the bench. Layton Choate and James Sims had the only Eagle bench points with 2 a piece. Four Hennessey Seniors – Juan Dominguez, Christian Tovar, Wade Vinson, and Noah Moery played their final home game in the inaugural season of the Eagle Event Center. Those emotions and those memories will always be fond ones, as the Eagles wrapped up their time playing on the home court with a resounding W.Coach Brady Page’s Hennessey Eagles (13-4, #6) move on to the Champions Bracket of the Area Tournament next Friday night at the Stride Bank Center in Enid.
