Halloween 2026 is in the books! Let me start this story with a little Halloween past.
A couple of years ago, I dressed up as Ursula from the movie The Little Mermaid. My little friend Violet Snow was almost 3 at the time and was my mini Ursula! We hit Main Street in Kingfisher for Main Street trick-or-treating.
Side note, girls: If you want honks and waves, dress yourself up with drag queen makeup and wear an oversized balloon with tentacles! Throw in a little mini Ursula, and you will receive all the attention your heart desires!
Then, last Halloween, we dressed as the Sanderson sisters from the movie Hocus Pocus! I was Winnie the witch! There are challenges with being Winnie. My wig was so tight I couldn’t wear my glasses, so I walked the street as a blind Winnie! Not to mention, my wig was so tight it cut off the blood flow to my head. I have a headache just thinking about it.
Now, this brings us to Halloween 2026. Violet, a little older, decided she wanted to be Wednesday Addams. This made her mother Morticia Addams. I considered Uncle Fester, which meant I would again have to endure something tight on my head, this time a bald cap. After the experience of cutting off blood flow the year before, I passed on Uncle Fester. Cousin Itt was another option, but that was way more hair than I wanted to wear!
So Morticia, aka Val, came up with an alternative plan! I would be their photographer. We planned an evening photo shoot. Morticia and Wednesday picked me up, and we headed to an old cemetery for pictures. Violet, aka Wednesday, was in character from the moment I removed my lens cap.
To add a few special effects, Val brought smoke bombs, but we didn’t realize they would have to be lit to achieve the smoke effect. We had to alter our plans a bit.
After a quick stop at a public restroom, we headed back to town. After the looks my two friends got walking into a public place, I was elected to go inside the store to purchase a cigarette lighter. I had never bought a lighter and didn’t realize how many options there were. Knowing time was of the essence with our lighting, I settled on a cute little torch lighter.
We made our way to another cemetery. This time, the smoke bombs were in the shot. Val hid behind the scenes to get the smoke effect, and when I saw smoke, I snapped the picture. Sounds easier than it actually was. I know I heard a lot of words coming from behind the headstones that I can’t write!
We did dispose of the smoke bomb remnants in my cup of ice. Safety first and all!
Val and I were concerned because our little Wednesday was very quiet on the ride home. I did get an update later that our adventure was all she could talk about after they dropped me off.
I know we probably could have created spooky photos with smoke and all the Halloween things using the apps they have today! But the one thing we couldn’t replicate on an app was the laughs and giggles. Making memories was the goal!
And I got to keep my glasses on without a headache!
