Kingfisher County officials, local leaders, contractors and community members gathered Monday afternoon to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Kingfisher County District 2 shop and office at 120 S. Arapaho Street in Hennessey.
The new facility will replace the district’s ageing shop and provide county road crews with a modern workspace designed to better serve residents throughout District 2.
District 2 County Commissioner Mike Sparks welcomed those in attendance, recognizing state and local officials, county employees, contractors and community supporters who came to celebrate the milestone.
Among those attending were State Senator Chuck Hall, State Representative Mike Dobrinski, Hennessey Mayor Randy Bohnstedt, Town Administrator Tiffany Rowen, Kingfisher County Sheriff Aaron Pitts, Commissioners Jeff Moss and Anthony Schwarz, along with numerous county officials, city staff and local contractors.
Sparks said he has envisioned the project for more than a year and is excited to finally see construction begin.
“I’ve already seen it built in my head,” Sparks said. “Now we get to build it for real.”
The new building will measure approximately 70 by 120 feet and will feature three offices and two drive-through work bays, with bays on the north and south sides. The updated facility is expected to improve daily operations while giving District 2 employees the space and equipment needed to efficiently maintain county roads and infrastructure.
Sparks noted that the current District 2 shop has served the county for decades and is so old that its original construction date is difficult to determine.
“I think we’re due for an update,” he said.
The commissioner emphasized that local contractors will be used whenever possible, keeping county tax dollars in the community while supporting area businesses.
Following the remarks, officials and District 2 employees grabbed ceremonial shovels and officially broke ground, marking the beginning of construction. Once completed, the new shop and office will replace one of the county’s oldest service facilities and serve as the headquarters for District 2 road operations.
