Dawn Reitz is the owner and founder of The Quilt Lady, located in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. She has been a crafter for many years. While working her day job at Pioneer Telephone, she signed up to teach painting classes in the evenings at the Vo-Tech. A few days before the classes were scheduled to start, Dawn’s mother brought her a quilt block from a class she had taken. This was in 1987, and that single quilt block ignited a passion in Dawn. She called to request teaching quilting instead of painting, knowing she would be learning alongside her students.
Over the years, Dawn has created many memory quilts using clothing and T-shirts, and I have seen some of these given as graduation gifts. I have always admired her work. In 2008, Dawn retired from Pioneer to dedicate more time to her quilting passion. The sky was the limit, and she eventually opened The Quilt Lady on Main Street in Kingfisher. After about four years at that location, she realized her shop and vision had outgrown the space. She then moved her shop to its current location at 223 N. 6th Street in Kingfisher, which offers a larger area for quilt classes, embroidery projects, alterations, and more.
Dawn’s husband, Bill Reitz, manages the behind-the-scenes work, overseeing renovations and helping maintain the old building, which originally began as a lumber yard in the 1940s. On the day I visited, Dawn was teaching a private quilting class to a student who was piecing together a quilt for her grandson. Through By Ann, The Quilt Lady has been voted the best quilt shop in Oklahoma for two consecutive years.
