Summer (Berkenbile) Munroe was born and raised in Hennessey, Ok by Jimmy and Beth Berkenbile. Summer is the granddaughter of Clarence and Bea Herrin and Leland and Glennabelle Berkenbile. Summer has two siblings (Autumn and Joseph). She graduated from Hennessey High School in 2000. After graduation, Summer attended NOC and received her ADN ( Associate Degree in Nursing) in 2005. Summer went back to college at NWOSU and graduated with her BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) in 2016. She obtained certification in Electronic Fetal Monitoring in 2022. ( This is an extra certification in specialty fields that isn’t necessary but shows competence in a given field or specialty).
Summer has worked in women’s health her entire nursing career. Her first ten years were spent on Labor & Delivery at Integris Enid Hospital. Then, spent four years as a clinic RN for Dr. Tucker, an OBGYN. Summer’s calling was Labor & Delivery and she went back to Integris Enid Hospital and continues to work full-time in Labor & Delivery. Summer’s nursing career was through Integris, starting as a nursing tech to an RN. That being said, she celebrated this past March 20 years as an Integris employee. Summer was a top 5 finalist for March of Dimes Nurse of the Year in her specialty in 2013 and was nominated again this year!
Summer has also received the Daisy Award. This is a special recognition because it comes from the patients, their stories, and nominations. Learning about the meaningful impact Summer has had on the lives of patients and their families truly underscores the value of her work, making even the toughest days worthwhile.
Another thing Summer does is help precept the newly hired employees in the Labor & Delivery unit. Once nurses pass nursing school and the National Boards…then the hard work starts! Taking new hires under her wing and showing them the ropes not taught in nursing school is something Summer is great at. Summer is not only the most caring, kind, graceful, sweet, and always smiling nurse, but it is also Summer as a person. You will never meet anyone nicer. Summer married Dustin Munroe in 2001, and they have two children (Ethan and Clare). Ethan is 18 years old and is currently attending NOC. Clare is 15 years old and currently a sophomore at Hennessey High School. Summer’s hobbies include reading books, knitting, cooking, learning about herbs, walking her dogs, and watching her kids in their activities. Summer ran for a few years. She competed in several 5K’s, 10K’s, and 4 half marathons. Three of the half marathons were in 1 year, something Summer is proud of, and rightfully so. Summer also started OkSeasonedSisters with her sister, Autumn. This began in 2020 when we shared recipes, life lessons, and stories. Summer is very thankful to have been born and raised in Hennessey. It is a blessing to give my children the same opportunity. To know the small-town feeling, all the love and support our community gives each other. It truly is a blessing. AAH, Shelley Muzny
