The Hennessey Eagles needed a bounce back in a big way after last years disappointing 1-9 season. They opened the 24’ campaign at home against the Cashion Wildcats.
The boys got out to just about the best start you can, as an interception by senior LB Kevin Trillo gave the Eagles the football, and newcomer freshman Hagan Copeland ran a 40-yard touchdown to the house. In the next possession, the Eagles marched down the field, and Braedyn Richardson punched in a 2-yard touchdown. This momentum once again continued, with a drive led by some spectacular catches by Hunter Weber led to a Holder/Weber team up in the endzone. Jessin Hardin would tack on some 2-point conversions, and the Birds would quickly pounce 23-0.
There would be no more scoring in the 1st half for the Eagles, and the halftime score would be 23-7 after a touchdown drive for the Cats. Cashion implemented a run-heavy second half that would be quite successful, as they tacked on eight more points and cut back the Eagle’s lead by a possession. Luis Macias-Montoya, the JR kicker, sent it to an 11
point lead with his 30-yard field goal, but back-to-back touchdown drives by the Wildcats gave the Eagles no chance but to make a statement. Unfortunately, Montoya was given a 40+ yard field goal attempt that missed slightly right, and the Wildcats walked away with a 29-26 victory. The Eagles head to Chisholm next week.
