Business and residents south of Hennessey along Hwy 81 experienced a strong gas odor this morning. The strong smell was reported from Quick Pump all the way to Mitchell road. Hennessey Police, ONG and Mustang Fuels searched the area and according to Hennessey Police, a worker accidentally released a small amount of Mecaptan. This is an odorant that is added into natural gas so that it is detectable to improve safety. Very small amounts of Mecaptan go a long way and have a very strong odor but it is not harmful.
