Revenge may not have been on Hagen Copeland’s mind when the ball was teed up for the Eagles Class 2AII-District 1 matchup with the Meeker Bulldogs Thursday night at Eagle Stadium, for it was just 12 months ago when Copeland’s sophomore season ended with a broken collarbone midway through the game at Meeker. But revenge is exactly what Copeland got. On the first play from scrimmage, the Junior Free Safety intercepted a Bulldog pass and returned it 55 yards for the touchdown. After a David Renteria point after, the Eagles had all the points they would need to cruise to victory over Meeker, only 11 seconds into the game.
To add insult to “injury,” Copeland put up two more scores for good measure – a 43-yard catch and run, and a 36-yard punt return TD. Hagen touched the ball 5 times, scoring 18 points, as the Eagles beat the undermanned Bulldogs 58-6 to remain undefeated in district play.
The Eagles scored in all three phases of the game, with 7 different players adding to the tally. German Martinez, Alex Gonzalez, and Levi Ferrell all scored rushing touchdowns, while Copeland, Brayan Soto, and Brady Amburn each had TD catches. Soto also scored on a 41-yard fumble recovery return, and Freshman David Renteria knocked through 4 PATs in the route.
The Eagles Defense was stout, to say the least, allowing only 2 first downs, with the Bulldog offense going 0-8 on 3rd Down, and 0-1 on 4th, and even while allowing a 96-yard missed assignment touchdown run in the late moments, giving up only 62 yards of total offense on the night. The visiting Bulldogs ran only 1 play on the Hennessey side of the 50 yard line all night – a point-after, scramble-drill, pass conversion attempt in the 4ththat was batted away incomplete by Barrit Hardin.
Freshman Raiden Briley led the defense with 7 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 fumble recovery. Outside Linebacker Brayson Brinson added 4 tackles, 2 TFLs, and forced 3 Bulldog fumbles.
