EAGLES v. GOLDBUGS
October 9, 2026 by Eagle Voice
Ball control. Owning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Limiting mistakes. Forcing your will on the opponent. This is the formula that the Hennessey Football Eagles have used all season, especially during the 3-game win streak they took into their 2AII-District 1 matchup Friday at NWOSU against the Alva Goldbugs. That same formula, this time with an injury-depleted roster, led the Eagles to victory, 28-14 over the ‘bugs (1-5, 0-3).
The power run game of the Eagles amassed 235 yards on 50 carries, led by QB Levi Ferrell. The Senior ran the ball for 146 yards (5.2 ypc), with 4 touchdowns, and a 2-point conversion, completing 10 of 14 passes for 130 yards and no interceptions. The 4 rushing touchdowns give Levi 25 in his HS career, moving him to 7thall-time, ahead of Randy Holder (1982-’84) and Matt Leutjen (’09). With 1,874 total career passing yards, Ferrell edged past Dylan Hatchel (2010-’13) on the all-time list in that category.
Mario Lopez and Alex Gonzalez combined for an added 90 yards rushing, with Gonzalez sealing the victory on a 29-yard, hard fought 3rd down run in the final minute to put the game away.
Beau Vinson was Ferrell’s favorite target with 7 catches for 74 yards, totaling 109 all-purpose receiving and kick/punt return yards, unfortunately getting a 1st half TD catch erased by penalty. The Junior Strong Safety added 3 tackles defensively with one pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
The Eagles Defense allowed only five 3rd-Down conversions on 14 attempts, zero 4th-Down conversions, forcing 3 punts, 1 fumble, and 2 TOD’s in Alva’s nine offensive possessions. Mario Lopez was the leading tackler with 7 solos and 2 assists, followed by Hagen Copeland (6, 2) and Jameson Ladwig’s 8 total tackles, including 2 TFL’s and 1 QB sack. Senior Defensive Tackle Esteban Blanco earned the MaxPreps Defensive Player of the Game, accounting for 3 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 1 quarterback hurry.
