Time is running out for Oklahomans to get their REAL ID, with the federal deadline set for May 7โjust weeks away.
Beginning May 7, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driverโs license or identification card to board domestic flights, access military bases, or enter certain federal facilities. A valid passport or other federally approved ID will be required without it.
This requirement stems from the REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 in response to recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. While other post-9/11 reforms, such as the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, were implemented years ago, full enforcement of the REAL ID standard has faced multiple delaysโmost recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite its slow rollout, only about half of states were certified to issue REAL IDs by 2018. The Department of Homeland Security has signaled that further extensions are unlikely. Officials say this deadline marks the beginning of a phased enforcement, with full compliance expected by May 2027.
Oklahoma residents can still obtain noncompliant driverโs licenses and IDs, which are typically less costly and require fewer documents. However, those IDs will not be accepted for federal purposes.
You do not need a REAL ID if you donโt plan to fly, enter federal buildings, or visit military or nuclear facilities. A REAL ID is not required for driving, voting, federal benefits, entering most federal facilities, hospital access, or legal proceedings.
