HENNESSEY SCHOOLS FEATURE INTERNS

The All About Hennessey POST Features 2 students from the Hennessey High School intern program each week.  This week’s students are Amey Haymaker and Brooke Sims.

Amey Haymaker, an HHS senior is an intern at Wheatland Vet in Kingfisher under Dr. James Matousek.

Amey is a Hennessey native who has attended Hennessey schools from the time she started school. In 10th grade, she was inducted into NHS and FCCLA.  She was a member of 4H for four years and is currently in her fourth year of FFA. She served as secretary her sophomore year and this year she is president.

Amey began showing pigs when she was only eight and for several years showed sheep as well.  In 2022, she won Overall Swine Showmanship in the junior division at the Oklahoma Youth Expo and was awarded a significant college scholarship.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Amey has committed to becoming a veterinarian after all of her experience with animals. She secured an internship at Wheatland Vet in Kingfisher under Dr. James Matousek creating the opportunity for a lot of hands-on experiences.

One of the most unusual things she has seen is an infected claw on a cow. Dr. Matousek took the time to explain step by step the “how” and “why” to each part of the procedure in treating the animal. The most important part of the learning process for her is the exposure to the vocabulary that she is learning from Dr. Matousek which will serve her very well once she starts her veterinary program.

After graduation, Amey plans to get an Associates degree in Animal Science from Redlands Community College and then apply to Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Brooke Sims is a senior at HHS and is in her second year of the internship program at the Eagle Nest Daycare on the HPS campus.  She will be pursuing a career as a pediatric nurse. Brooke originally from Henricho, Virginia, moved here at the beginning of her seventh-grade year. Brooke was active in track and cross country during her freshman and sophomore years and has been a cheerleader for the past four years, and a member of FCCLA for two years. Brooke applied and was selected to be a Prom Ambassador this year through the Prom Shop in Enid. She will participate in modeling formals and attend regular meetings with other ambassadors to discuss formal fashion trends and fashion advice.

Most of her summers have been spent working. The summer after her sophomore year she worked for Vadder Mercantile, then a lifeguard at the Hennessey Aquatic Center, and she currently works at the Vernie Snow Aquatic Center in Kingfisher.

Since she also has a love for children, she has decided on a career as a pediatric traveling nurse. Last year she was an intern under the HPS school nurse, Shelley Muzny. Under Nurse Shelley, she was able to see up close the job of a school nurse.

This year she chose to work at the Eagle Nest Daycare on the HPS grounds working under Carol Roller, director of the daycare. The experience of being around small children has allowed her to get a general idea of what to expect as a pediatric nurse. After graduation, Brooke will attend UCO in Edmond where she will begin working on a degree in nursing and minor in Psychology.

Both Amey and Brooke are part of the Hennessey School Career & Internship Program.  This program, directed by Kim Hallmark matches students with business allowing them to experience real-life day-to-day operations in a career field they have an interest in.
