If there’s one thing Kingfisher County knows how to do well, it’s showing up, especially when it matters most. On March 22, the Kingfisher American Legion recognized those who make it happen.
That was on full display as local first responders, families, and community members gathered for a special ceremony honoring some of the very best in fire service, law enforcement, and emergency response across the county.
Recognizing the Best of the Best
Several departments across the county honored their own with awards, each telling a story of dedication, training, and a willingness to go above and beyond.
The Dover Fire Department recognized Stanton Sawyers as Firefighter of the Year, noting his extensive training and the countless hours he has spent maintaining equipment and staying ready for the next call.
The Okarche Volunteer Fire Department honored Dave Mayhew, a 26-year veteran who continues to serve both locally and with the Yukon Fire Department, proving that “retirement plans” don’t apply in the fire service.
The Hennessey Fire Department honored Chris Pribyl, a 15-year veteran and lieutenant who has played a key role in training and securing new equipment, including the department’s heavy brush truck.
The Omega Fire Department recognized Hunter Weins for his dedication to training and helping improve the department as a whole.
The Big 4 Fire Department recognized Colby Kale, a newer member already making a big impact through his eagerness to learn and serve.
Loyal Fire Department recognized Richard Meyer for many years of dedicated service to his community.
The Kingfisher Fire Department selected Justin King, a senior firefighter and paramedic known for stepping into leadership roles, mentoring others, and setting a high bar for patient care and professionalism.
Law Enforcement Recognitions
The Kingfisher Police Department named Officer Stephen Renbarger as Police Officer of the Year, recognizing his calm presence, proactive patrol work, and strong connection with the community.
The Kingfisher County Sheriff’s Office honored Deputy Jason Wiebelt, whose career began in dispatch before moving into law enforcement. His continued training and leadership in mentoring new deputies stood out over the past year.
The Hennessey Police Department recognized Captain Bryan Birch, a longtime officer and founder of the Reserve Angels program, known for bringing Christmas to children in need across the area.
911 Dispatch
Kingfisher County Dispatch recognized Bryann Walls, who leads countywide emergency communications while still actively dispatching calls herself.
Honoring Service, Past and Present
The ceremony also recognized long-standing members of the American Legion with decades of service and reflected on those who are no longer with us.
A moving tribute to prisoners of war and those missing in action reminded attendees that service comes with sacrifice, some seen, and some carried quietly.
The evening concluded with the playing of Taps by members of the Kingfisher High School band, bringing a respectful close to a night centered on honor, duty, and community.
