On Tuesday, February 24, Hennessey High School student Stephanie Valles was selected through the Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) program to represent her school at the Oklahoma State Capitol. She joined 16 other high school students from across the state for the leadership event.
While at the Capitol, Valles met with Senator Chuck Hall, Senator Jack Stewart, and Senator Shane Jett. She presented information on counteracting tobacco use among teens and discussed the importance of leadership opportunities for high school students. Conversations also focused on student safety and concerns affecting schools throughout Oklahoma.
The Youth Action for Health Leadership program, funded by TSET, empowers teens to advocate for healthier communities. YAHL focuses on tobacco prevention, improved nutrition, and increased physical activity. The youth-led initiative helps students develop leadership skills, organize community projects, meet with elected officials, and earn scholarships or incentives for their work.
