I’m not sure what all the hoopla is about with the 6–7 craze. I tried Googling it and only ended up more confused. Next week marks my 67th trip around the sun, and that didn’t show up in my search results either.
With 67 comes another year of this retirement gig. I’m learning that I don’t have to get out when the weather is bad. I can stay up as late as I want and sleep in the next day. It’s a pretty good arrangement.
I once loved my contacts, but I traded them in for glasses. I’ve decided to accessorize instead of wearing bifocals. I have green glasses simply because I like green. The leopard pair is for reading and close-up work. Then there’s the red pair. They turn into sunglasses outdoors and, for some reason, have become my trademark. People seem to connect the red glasses with my storytelling. The littles recognize me by those glasses when I see them out and about.
A few days ago, I was eating at a restaurant with a friend. A gentleman nearby was reading an AAK paper and kept glancing at me. Finally, he asked, “Is this you?” My friend elbowed me and whispered, “Celebrity,” when really it was the red glasses in the photo that gave me away.
I also get random pictures from my four-year-old friend’s mom. Apparently, Violet puts on her red glasses and tells her mom she’s Bon. I’m not entirely sure what all that entails, but it does give me a sense of responsibility to put positive vibes out into the world.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter which pair of glasses I’m wearing. I hope you see the person behind them, with a little humility and a willingness to keep learning. On this 67th trip around the sun, there’s always something new to learn—and someone is always watching.
