Last Saturday was a good but sad day. The long-standing south welcome to Hennessey sign was taken down, and the area around the new welcome sign was cleaned up. This sign on the south entrance of Hwy 81 welcomed visitors to our community for many years. It was adopted, maintained, and repainted by several groups, including the Hennessey Masons and Lions Clubs.
Jack Quirk, director of Discover Hennessey said this has always been part of the cleanup and branding plan that we have been working on for several years. The original plan was to try to save the sign but it was simply too far gone. The wood was rotted and the pipes that held it up were rusted out. We tried to give the sign to anyone that wanted to save it but there were no takers.
When we finally committed to demoing the sign, it got harder than we had figured. We got several estimates, but it was just too expensive. Last week, David Dollar volunteered to remove the sign and clean up the area. With permission from Greg Fuksa, the land Lessor, the work began. Saturday afternoon, Randy Copeland and David Wanzer with Dollar Trucking made quick work of the demo with their track hoe. The metal from the sign will go to David Dollar’s new recycling yard called Sooner Solids Solutions, located at the old sand pit at 16491 E. 650 Rd, Hennessey.
