WATER RESCUE

A heavy rain Sunday evening (Sunday, July 20th) at about 6:30pm left standing water on Hwy 81 south of the intersection of 650 Rd (Exxon Rd) in front of Quick Pump. Kingfisher County Deputy Charles Blackburn was parked at the edge of the water with his emergency lights on to warn drivers of the water on the roadway. According to an OHP report, Awzawntae Mauron Wheeler was traveling south on Hwy 81 at a high rate of speed as he approached the deputy’s car. Wheeler swerved to the right and hydroplaned into the deep water. Wheeler’s, passenger Megan Best, and a minor child all from Enid were trapped in the car sitting in about 4 feet of water.

Hennessey Police Officer Brandon Mooney and Hennessey Firefighter Levi Copeland broke out the back window of the car and helped the 3 occupants to dry ground. Hennessey’s LifeEMS checked out all 3 of the occupants, there were no injuries. Responding agencies included Hennessey Fire & Police, Kingfisher County Deputies, LifeEMS, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
