The Eagles home opener kicked off tonight vs. the #6 ranked Crossings Christian. They looked strong on the first drive, shutting Crossings down and forcing a punt, but a fumble on their own side of the field set up a 36-yard touchdown for the Knights. As the saying goes, βWhen it rains it poursβ. Tonight, it poured on the Eagles. The Crossings defense forced stop after stop and the Knights wouldnβt be denied offensively, garnering multiple long touchdown runs via numerous Knights. At the end of the 2nd quarter, Crossings led a nice drive that ended with a touchdown, capping off a 27-0 first half.
The second half saw much of the same, with Crossings struggling mightily with penalties, but it proved to not hurt them as theyβd tack on a 59-yard rushing touchdown in the early minutes of the 3rd. Following a misstep by the Eagles deep in their own territory, they only needed 5 yards to extend their lead to 41.
At the start of the 4th, freshman Issac Renteria almost ran back a 70+ yard Pick Six, falling short at the 2 followed by a holding to send them back to the 12 looking for their first points of the night. Weston Smith would then reel in a 13-yard touchdown. That would wrap up the scoring for the game, as the Eagles fell 41-7 when the clock struck 0. Before the game, RedLevΓ© Dance Studio sold sandwiches as a fundraiser and Diamondback Softball had a bake sale. The Lions Club also had their “punt, pass, kick” fundraiser, we will have more details on the punt, pass, kick later. Photos by Libby Seiger and Jude Hestand. Story by Taylor Ladwig.
